Varicose Veins

What are Varicose Veins?

Varicose veins are enlarged and twisted veins, most commonly found in the legs. They occur when the valves inside the veins weaken, causing blood to pool and the veins to become swollen.

Causes of Varicose Veins

  • Weak valves: Valves in the veins prevent blood from flowing backward. When these valves weaken, blood can pool, leading to varicose veins.
  • Genetics: A family history of varicose veins increases your risk.
  • Age: The risk of developing varicose veins increases with age.
  • Pregnancy: Pregnancy can put extra pressure on the veins in the legs.
  • Obesity: Excess weight can increase pressure on the veins.
  • Prolonged standing or sitting: Standing or sitting for long periods can slow blood flow in the legs.

Symptoms of Varicose Veins

  • Visible, enlarged veins: These often appear as blue or purple cords.
  • Aching or heavy legs
  • Swelling in the ankles and feet
  • Itching around the veins
  • Leg cramps, especially at night

Treatment for Varicose Veins

  • Lifestyle changes:
    • Regular exercise
    • Weight management
    • Elevating your legs
    • Avoiding prolonged standing or sitting
    • Wearing compression stockings
  • Medical procedures:
    • Sclerotherapy: A solution is injected into the vein to make it collapse.
    • Laser therapy: A laser is used to heat and seal the vein.
    • Radiofrequency ablation: Radiofrequency energy is used to heat and seal the vein.
    • Surgery: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove the varicose veins.

When to See a Doctor

If you have symptoms of varicose veins, it’s important to see a healthcare provider. They can diagnose your condition and recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Note: While varicose veins are often a cosmetic concern, they can sometimes lead to more serious complications, such as blood clots or skin ulcers. It’s important to seek medical attention if you experience any concerning symptoms.
